Trail Experience
Starting with Ephraim Cyn Side Trail
Starting from Ephraim, we took Ephraim Cyn Side Trail on the Arapeen Trail system. The journey began in the sagebrush and progressed through pinyon-juniper trees, areas of red and green dirt, and finally into aspen and pine forests. The trail continually ascends, offering a constantly changing and beautiful landscape. The diversity of the trail means it’s suitable for all ages and skill levels, with options ranging from easy cruising roads to more technical black diamond trails.
Arapeen Manti Canyon and Milky Falls
Yearns Reservoir is an excellent spot for both novice and seasoned anglers. Easy to access, it attracts many young anglers who enjoy fishing right off the main highway. The Arapeen Trail’s appeal lies in its easy access to such productive fishing spots, making it an ideal destination for families and fishing enthusiasts.
Lowry Fork Fox Run and Middle Fork Trails
Technically, this trail isn’t a “hidden” gem because it’s right off Skyline Road. It might be overlooked due to the abundance of nearby routes, but it remains a gem in plain sight. From the summit, it offers glimpses of a tranquil stream trickling down the valley. The stunning views change throughout the year, enhancing the trail’s charm. As you enter a wide meadow and travel slightly downhill, look for the Forest Service trail marker and take the left path, rated intermediate. Although the trail narrows, it remains wide enough for full-size SxSs or Jeeps. You’ll descend into a narrow canyon with breathtaking scenery on both sides. Expect some muddy sections, occasionally over a foot deep. The trail alternates between downhill and uphill sections, with several open meadows perfect for stopping points.
Mary’s Lake and North Dragon to Horn Mountain
One of the interesting lakes out there is Joes Valley. The trails there are forested and recommended for UTVs and ATVs. You can find camping and picnic areas, making it the perfect place to go exploring with your kids and family. The trails might be difficult for some new riders.
Skyline Drive Trails
Skyline Drive is a magical place to ride a UTV. It is a long, scenic road that many people in Utah are not aware of. The drive takes you right along the top of the mountains, where you can find some excellent fishing lakes. From certain vantage points, you can see both east and west; on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Colorado in the distance, and with a bit of luck, Nevada as well.
However, the real magic lies in the expansive views, not just seeing into other states. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the stunning landscapes.
Skyline Drive is divided into North Skyline and South Skyline. Most of the drive is on a dirt road, with only a few miles paved. It stretches from US-6 in Spanish Fork Canyon (Tucker) to I-70 near Salina, offering a beautiful and varied ride. You can loop around in many places, head into town for lunch or gas, or explore various canyons like Manti Canyon, Ephraim Canyon, or Orangeville Canyon, just past Joes Valley Reservoir.
Beaver Creek Road
The area features numerous smaller trails and roads that wind through the scenic Manti-LaSal National Forest. Beaver Creek Road intersects with several of these trails, running east-west between Mayfield-Gunnison Road and Skyline Drive.
Mount Baldy Road
Mount Baldy Road provides access to the north and west sides of Mt. Baldy. This unmaintained road can be challenging to navigate during inclement weather. On the northern end of the road, there are a few primitive camping sites accessible by full-size vehicles and trailers.

Diverse Riding Types
One of the things I love about the Arapeen Trail system is the diversity of riding types. You can go from open roads to trails that lead to high mountain lakes, ponds, and camping spots. The Arapeen Trail system has it all. Get a map and come out here to enjoy it with us.
Fishing Adventure at Arapeen Trails
Nice, fish number one—a little rainbow trout. Let’s see if we can get him in. Oh, wait, it’s a little tiger trout. Look at that! Beautiful high mountain tiger trout. Let’s get him unhooked and back in the water.
There he goes, back under the mat and out of sight. Cool! There are more fish in here, and I bet there are some bigger ones too. When there are tiger trout, you know they grow fast.
Trail Conditions and Safety
Some of the trails might have some snow even during the warm months so please be careful when you are riding on these trails. It’s so green and gorgeous right now.
The lake is perfect for fishing and family picnics, and the terrain is not very hard, so everyone can drive it.
Right down here at the end of the lake, there’s Trail 91. It’s a 66-inch wide trail, very beautiful, and rated more difficult in one section where you go through a creek and up a steep section.
What do we think of the Arapeen Trail?
We absolutely love it and can’t wait to come back. Here are a few things you should know if you’re planning a trip here:
- First, the trails are rocky—really rocky. Every trail has its share of rocks, making for a rugged ride. Second, since Manti is on the side of a mountain, expect a lot of uphill and downhill travel. The trails are not smooth and groomed; they are challenging and require technical skill.
- If you enjoy technical challenges and rugged trails, the Arapeen Trail is perfect for you. However, don’t expect to cover as many miles in a day as you might on the Paiute Trail. The proximity of the trails to the town is convenient—you’re on the trails almost immediately after leaving town.
- The temperatures vary greatly, so bring a jacket. One day it was in the 90s, and the next, we wore jackets all day due to the chilly weather and a nearby storm.
- Important Note
There are so many unmarked trails in this area, but we recommend staying on the marked ones because the unmarked trails might be more difficult and dangerous.
