The north part is passable by crossover vehicles, and I have even seen cars on it, though that is stretching it. The southern part gets much rougher in some places and is best navigated by a UTV. I have driven the whole route in my truck before, but it was quite rough in some areas. Even a four-wheel-drive truck struggled on some of the miles.
If you go early in the morning or late at night, you’re almost guaranteed to see deer, as they love the high country. Just last week, I was on Skyline Drive, and despite it being the first week of June, there was still quite a bit of snow. I saw more than 100 elk, and many deer including some nice four-point bucks, a badger, and two porcupines, with hardly anyone else around. While it might be impassable right now, in a few weeks, you’ll be able to escape the heat of the valleys.
Traffic is usually light, and while there may be campers along the way, they are not overly crowded due to the difficulty of bringing trailers to many spots. The road itself is in good condition and not too intimidating, though you might encounter some mud holes that you’ll need to navigate with your UTV.
Escaping the heat is easy on this drive. It’s definitely recommended to bring a coat, as afternoon thunderstorms can occur and help keep things cool.
For first-timers, it might be best to make one of the many loops, such as going from Mayfield to Ferron, getting lunch, and then looping back. You could also go a little east of Skyline Drive Utah with your fishing pole and catch fish at Whiskey Springs Reservoir or even Ferron Reservoir.
