“You have to love the slick rock of Moab, but summer in Moab is hot. In contrast, the mountains of Ephraim Canyon are beautiful and cool in the summer. There’s no slick rock, but the dirt trails are fantastic. You can ride up trails without having to return on the same path.
You can go up Pioneer Canyon and come down the main canyon, head over to Willow Creek Road, go fishing, or ride to the top and onto Skyline Drive. This place has a never-ending set of trails perfect for UTVs. It’s beautiful, fun, and warm during the day but cool in the mornings, so you’ll need a coat. You’ll see far more wildlife here than on the slick rock of Moab.
I don’t want to say anything negative about Moab’s slick rock; we love it. It’s fun, but the problem is the heat. For a summer UTV ride, Ephraim Canyon can be the perfect temperature. Remember, you may get afternoon thunderstorms, and in the morning and evening, it can be cool, so bring a coat. You still want to bring sunblock as you can burn easily at the higher elevations.
The air smells fresh in the summer up Ephraim Canyon, unlike the Moab slick rock.
In Moab, it is hard to find a good spot to camp. Ephraim can be a little hard as well, but it is way easier than Moab, especially if you just want to camp anywhere and not in an organized campground.
Now, let’s talk about restaurants. There are a few more restaurants in Moab than in Ephraim, but the restaurants in Ephraim are hardly crowded in the summer because Snow College is out and there are no students around. It’s nice to go to a few places where you can always get in and enjoy good food.
If you want to have some fun and ride a UTV in the summer, Ephraim Canyon is the place to be. The trails there would take more than a few days to explore fully, even if you were riding fast, let alone taking your time and having fun. You can even go over the top to Joe’s Valley or head south to Manti. The point is, you can keep going and have a good time. You can choose trails as rough as you want, or almost as smooth as a two-lane highway, even though it’s dirt.”
